Backlinks. That's what every site needs in order to move up in the SE rankings. People who are willing to link to your site. The best quality backlinks are going to be from well-done sites and those that have a decent Google Page Rank. Actually, when it comes to the search engines, they don't much care; a link is a link to them. Nonetheless, it's always best to have a quality site linking to you because it will be one that many people visit, thus exposing your site's link to those visitors. Truthfully, would you feel better if you received a backlink from Microsoft or from a trashy Made-For-Adsense site? It's a no-brainer who is going to generate better traffic for you.
A good way to find backlinks is to see who is linking to your competitors. The way to do this is to hit up either Google, Yahoo, or MSN and type, "link:www.alink.com" For example, to see who is linking to my own site, I would type in, "link:www.romantic-oregon-coast.com" That would give me the list I'm looking for. If there are people linking to your competitor's site, they might also link to you for free, a link exchange or for pay. Try it and get those backlinks working for you.
Here's to your success!
